In most, if not all, elevators (I guess I haven’t seen an elevator without one of these), there is a button to call the security desk. Typically used in instances where someone is stuck in an elevator, or when someone is creeping you out. But let’s look at what happens when someone gets on an elevator, let’s say the 8th floor, and instead of pressing the button labeled ‘1′, they hit the button with the picture of a phone on it and the intercom starts ringing to the security desk…

Inquiry part 1: Do you – a) press the ‘1′ button and ride the elevator down and politely tell the security folks you pressed the wrong button? or b) jump off the elevator, still on the 8th floor, giggling like a little school girl and wait for another elevator?

Let’s assume you chose option ‘b’ above. Once you get to the 1st floor and exit the elevator, you notice one of the security guards standing in front of the elevator you had pressed the intercom button in…

Inquiry part 2: Do you – a) walk over to the security guard and politely tell him you pressed the wrong button, but were too embarrassed to explain yourself over the intercom? or b) run the opposite way down the hallway, giggling like a little school girl while your fellow coworker, who rode the elevator down with you shouts to the security guard, “IT WAS HER! SHE PRESSED THE INTERCOM BUTTON! SHE’S GETTING AWAY!”

Let’s assume that, including myself, 4 people (all strangers to me) get on the elevator. Buttons for floors 4, 5, 8 (my floor), and 12 are pressed by the 4 individuals. In the elevator, the four of us are standing shoulder to shoulder in the same order as our floors, 4th floor person next to 5th floor person next to me next to 12th floor person. We make the stops at floors 4 and 5 and the respective people get off. Now I am left with the 12 floor person with whom I have been standing right next too.

Etiquette question – do you remain standing right next to your fellow elevator rider? Or do you casually move to the other side of the elevator?

This question arose because I’m always thinking that if I remain standing next to the other person, they may think I’m weird to be standing so close in an otherwise empty elevator. But, if I move away, do they think they are offensive to me in some way?

Etiquette question – Would you remove the unknown coworker’s meal, put it on the counter next to the microwave, and let it get cold rather than keep it nicely encased in its microwave cocoon?

I waited about 23 seconds before hunger took over. I removed the meal and put it on the counter next to the microwave. It was a good thing I did. As I found out later, the coworker who had carelessly left their meal in the microwave had left for a meeting. They had a very cold lunch when they returned and hour later.

The thing I hate most about public toilets is sitting down, only to realize the seat is still warm from a previous, unknown (or known, read on) assailant.

The other day I was “pounding out a grumpy” in the mens room. I finished my business, exited the stall and proceeded to wash my hands. As I was washing my hands, another gentleman entered the restroom and entered the stall which I had just exited.

Would the proper etiquette be to (a) warn the poor unfortunate soul that I had just violated that particular toilet no less than 30 seconds ago, or (b) is it an “every man for himself” type situation?
