Sept. 23, 2008 — Trapped inside a Lebanese weevil covered in ancient Burmese amber, a tiny colony of bacteria and yeast has lain dormant for up to 45 million years. A decade ago Raul Cano, now a scientist at the California Polytechnic State University, drilled a tiny hole into the amber and extracted more than 2,000 different kinds of microscopic creatures.

Activating the ancient yeast, Cano now brews barrels (not bottles) of pale ale and German wheat beer through the Fossil Fuels Brewing Company.

“You can always buy brewing yeast, and your product will be based on the brewmaster’s recipes,” said Cano. “Our yeast has a double angle: We have yeast no one else has and our own beer recipes.”

The beer has received good reviews at the Russian River Beer Festival and from other reviewers. The Oakland Tribune beer critic, William Brand, says the beer has “a wierd spiciness at the finish,” and The Washington Post said the beer was “smooth and spicy.”

Part of that taste comes from the yeast’s unique metabolism. “The ancient yeast is restricted to a narrow band of carbohydrates, unlike more modern yeasts, which can consume just about any kind of sugar,” said Cano.

Government unveils world’s fastest computer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists at the Los Alamos government weapons lab have built the world’s fastest computer, capable of sustaining 1,000 trillion operations per second.

The Energy Department and IBM Corp. announced the breakthrough Monday.

The computer will be used to help maintain the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.

Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman says the new computer, named Roadrunner, also will be used to help solve global energy problems and “open new windows of knowledge” in basic research.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and IBM worked for six years to achieve the world record computer speed.

Clay Aiken impregnates record producer

Canadian music producer Jaymes Foster-Levy is pregnant with pop crooner Clay Aiken’s child and is due in August, reports TMZ.

The mother was reportedly artificially inseminated with Aiken’s sperm.

Foster-Levy, sister of record mogul David Foster, splits her time between L.A. and Victoria, B.C., reports Jam! Showbiz. The runner-up on 2003’s American Idol, Aiken, 29, reportedly lives with her in L.A and plans to take an active fathering role.
Aiken’s management company brought the two together to work on his follow-up album to 2003’s Measure of a Man.

Aiken told Jam! Showbiz the two “got along famously” from the beginning and calls th record e producer “absolutely wonderful.”

Aiken’s fourth album, On My Way Here, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard charts on May 6.

*Side note – I can’t believe Aiken’s got a FOURTH album out. Who buys/downloads/pirates this crap?

‘Darth Vader’ spared jail in Jedi church attacks
HOLYHEAD, Wales – A man who dressed up as Darth Vader, wearing a garbage bag for a cape, and assaulted the founders of a group calling itself the Jedi church was given a suspended sentence Tuesday.

Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones — aka Master Jonba Hehol — with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head, prosecutors told Holyhead Magistrates’ Court.

He also whacked Jones’ 18-year-old cousin, Michael Jones — known as Master Mormi Hehol — bruising his thigh in the March 25 incident, prosecutors said.

The two cousins and Barney Jones’ brother, Daniel, set up the Church of Jediism, Anglesey order, last year. Jedi is the faith followed by some of the central characters in the “Star Wars” films.

The group, which claims about 30 members, says on its Web site that it uses “insight and knowledge” from the films as “a guide to living a better and more worthwhile life.”

“We all love the films and what they stand for. Obviously some people are going to laugh about it,” the Wales on Sunday newspaper quoted Barney Jones as saying last month. “But a lot of people do take it seriously.”

Unfortunately for Hughes, his March attack was recorded on a video camera that the cousins had set up to film themselves in a light saber battle.

“Darth Vader! Jedis!” Hughes shouted as he approached.

Hughes claimed he couldn’t remember the incident, having drunk the better part of a 2 1/2-gallon box of wine beforehand.

“He knows his behavior was wrong and didn’t want it to happen but he has no recollection of it,” said Hughes’ lawyer, Frances Jones.

District Judge Andrew Shaw sentenced Hughes to two months in jail but suspended the sentence for one year. He also ordered Hughes to pay $195 to each of his victims and $117 in court costs.

In the 2001 United Kingdom census, 390,000 — 0.7 percent of the population — listed Jedi as their religion.
